Thmaramkulangara Ayyappa Seva Samithi released this years annual smaranika Makarajyothi 2008 on 29/12/2008.
This years main attraction is that the main theme is about elephants. It contains a detailed study into the various aspects of elephant care, aana chikitsa (elephant treatments), rules relating to elephants etc.
Main contributories to this include, Sri.Aavanaparambu Maheswaran Namboodiripadu, Sri. K. C. Panikar, Sri. Sunil Kumar, Sri. Kaimal, all famous vetenery doctors specialised in elephant care.
Then you have a thought provoking article by Mr. Easwaran, Chief Forest Officer, about elephants.
Other writers include Madambu Kunjikuttan, Chowalloor Krishnankutty, Mr. Ramachandran of Thechikottukavu Dewaswam, etc.
The cover page is the rare pic of the legendary Guruvayoor Kesavan in "madappadu" taken by the famous Pepita Seth. She has also written an article about her experience with elephants in kerala , especially the circumstances that led to this famous picture. Another notable thing is the pictures of around 200 elephants that is either living or recently died.It is really a collectors piece , no doubt. |

Kerala has more than nine hundred elephants in captivity. Most of them are owned by temples and individuals. They are used for religious ceremonies in and around the temples, and a few elephants work at timber yards. Experts defined the necessary features (Lakshanam) for a good elephant. The sexy features of the elephants are narrated in different books like "Mathanga Leela". They even said, the girls should walk like elephant to get more attraction. ..
